Passwords Are a Thing of the Past

Dear readers,

I have decided to no longer password-protect my Megaupload posts because they are preventing some readers from being able to download. As a result, I have gone through every post on the blog and deleted all passwords; in addition, I've made sure every link is alive and every video is still up. You will also notice that I've discontinued providing links to other reviews. These are easily found if one isn't satisfied with my rambling sentences.

I have gone to great lengths to make this blog highly searchable, so if you're (relatively) new to the blog, use the "Lunar Lexicon" to explore; all the terms have been cross-referenced to make searching by this method conducive to new discoveries. As I mentioned before, all the blog's links are alive and well.

I also want to thank all of you for your continuing support and great comments. It's amazing how quickly the blog is growing; I have some great things planned for us in the coming months, so keeping coming back!

  2. Voixautre, after leeching around for some weeks and downloading almost everything you have on offer let me take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks. You're doing a great favor to music-lovers all around the globe and I can only hope that you will keep on doing so for quite some time.

Looking forward to all the great posts to come and sending you my best Regards!

  3. Tim & Telehorse, thank you for your comments. You (and all the blog's readers) are my main motivation for doing this. Collaborating with all of you in creating (La) luna has been extremely gratifying, and I intend to keep doing this in some form until the music runs out (is such a thing even possible?) :)

  4. I've always thought password protected music was contrary to the whole p2p ideology. It's less evil, but akin to charging for the music. That's not to say that you don't deserve acknowledgement for your time and effort. You do. Echoing what the others above have said, you have great taste in music and thoughtful treatments that will keep me coming back. Thanks, voixautre.

  5. Melvillain, I'm not sure I see how it is "akin to charging for the music," since every post had the password attached. It was a way for me to protect my links to keep them alive for all of you. To take your analogy a step further, it would be like running a restaurant and charging for meals but giving the customers not only the food they order but also the money to pay for the food. Is this really charging them for the food? Anyway, I've discontinued passwords for now, but if I notice a spike in dead links (I've had none in 3 months of blogging on this site), then passwords will have to be revisited, thanks again ~ voixautre

  6. I didn't intend that as a judgment on your practices. I am of the opinion that trying to protect files that a person uploads because they feel the deserve some sort of recognition is contrary to the idea of sharing music. It requires a recognition of the poster by only retrieving the files from where the password can be obtained. My view of p2p practices is that the uploader is trying to give the whole community the benefit of their knowledge and resources. Since the uploader is not the creator of the material they should not expect anything more than they give to the creators in return for sharing their material. In other words, file sharers share files that they have no right to, so it's disingenuous of them to expect recognition for their part in the process. Again, this is not a judgment against you, it's just my personal opinion about certain p2p practices. I may be out of bounds leaving this comment here because what I describe is closer to torrent practices than music blog practices.

  7. I do see your point, although I also agree that this issue relates more to torrents. However, I have seen this proprietary trend among sharers too, and it is strange. My reason for adding passwords to the downloads was simply to keep the files alive longer. Your point alone would have made me reconsider, but coupled with the fact that the passwords were preventing many from downloading, I'm glad they are gone. Thanks for you input Melvillain!

  11. I feel like the use of passwords makes it a little more like the old days of making tape mixes and trading with friends, in that it prevents random googling and downloading of files that haven’t first gone through the blog where the info about the password would be. I don’t in any way see it as you trying to get recognition. The whole point of the blog as I see it, is to spread the word about some very interesting music that people might not otherwise hear and sharing info with everyone about the artists. If it is more like friendly trading and discussions about music among a few people, it seems more ethical than just wholesale dispersion, subjugating much of the advantage to the artists in the process. Maybe I’m over-analyzing. Keep up the good work, it is much appreciated.

  12. Jeff, well-stated. It was a tough decision, but the fact that some readers in certain countries who need to use leechers to download megaupload files couldn't download due to the passwords pushed me to get rid of them. As I mentioned in an earlier comment, if my links begin to fail all of a sudden (every link on the blog is alive right now), I will bring them back
